The Privacy Exposure
Windows 11 is designed to help you quickly resume your previous work. By default, whenever you open a document, a photograph, or a spreadsheet, the operating system aggressively logs that activity. It then permanently pins a list of your most recently opened files directly to the bottom of the Start Menu in a section called “Recommended.” It also populates the “Jump Lists” (the menu that appears when you right-click an icon on the taskbar) with your recent activity. If you share a computer with colleagues or family members, this means your entire workflow is instantly exposed the second anyone opens the Start Menu. You must instruct Windows to stop logging your activity.
How to Turn Off Recent Items
You can permanently sever the tracking engine via the Personalization settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Personalization.
- In the main window, scroll down and click on Start.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled “Show recently opened items in Start, Jump Lists, and File Explorer.”
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
A Blank Slate
The change takes effect the exact second you flip the switch. Windows 11 will immediately purge its internal tracking log. The “Recommended” section of your Start Menu will instantly clear out all of your recent files, and right-clicking taskbar icons will no longer reveal your recent history. Moving forward, your workflow remains entirely private, and you can open the Start Menu in public without fear of exposing sensitive document titles.
