The Linguistic Interruption Vector
Google Chrome features a powerful, integrated translation engine. Whenever you navigate to a webpage that is written in a language differing from your operating system’s default, Chrome automatically drops a prominent, disruptive dialogue box from the address bar offering to translate the page. While useful for occasional encounters with foreign text, this feature is highly annoying for bilingual users who frequently read news or documentation in multiple languages, as they must constantly dismiss the intrusive prompt.
How to Disable the Translation Feature
You can instruct Chrome’s internal language engine to permanently cease offering translations, ensuring the browser always renders the original text without interruption.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Languages.
5. Look down the main pane until you find the section titled Google Translate.
6. Locate the master toggle switch labelled Offer to send pages in other languages to Google Translate.
7. Click the toggle to switch it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).
The Surgical Alternative: If you want to disable the prompt for a specific language (e.g., you are fluent in French but want Chrome to still translate German), do not touch the master toggle. Instead, click the “Never offer to translate these languages” option, click “Add languages,” and add French to your exclusion list.
