The Storage Exhaustion Vector
By default, the iPhone Camera app captures a “Live Photo” every time you press the shutter button. Instead of a single static image, the phone actually records 1.5 seconds of high-definition video before and after the shot. While this creates a fun, animated effect in your photo gallery, these hybrid video files consume significantly more storage space than standard photographs. Over years of use, thousands of Live Photos will rapidly exhaust your iCloud storage tier and consume massive amounts of local disk space.
How to Turn Off Live Photos Permanently
If you tap the Live Photo icon in the Camera app to turn it off, Apple aggressively defaults to turning it back on the very next time you open the app. You must change the core settings to force it to stay off permanently.
1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap on Camera.
3. Tap on Preserve Settings.
4. Locate the toggle switch labelled Live Photo at the bottom of the list.
5. Tap the toggle to switch it to the On position (the switch will turn green). Note: This tells the iPhone to remember your choice, rather than reverting to Apple’s default.
6. Now, exit Settings and open the actual Camera app.
7. Look at the top-right corner of the screen and tap the concentric circles icon (the Live Photo symbol) so that a diagonal slash appears through it.
Because you enabled “Preserve Settings,” the Camera app will now respect your decision. Live Photos will remain permanently disabled, saving massive amounts of storage space.
