The Tab Clutter Vector
When using Safari on an iPhone, opening a link from an email, a text message, or a social media application often forces the browser to spawn an entirely new background tab. Over months of regular use, this behaviour silently accumulates dozens or even hundreds of dormant tabs. This massive backlog creates significant visual clutter in the tab switcher and can eventually degrade the browser’s performance and responsiveness.
How to Close All Tabs Instantly
Apple deliberately hides a global ‘Close All’ command to prevent users from having to swipe away hundreds of tabs individually.
1. Open the Safari app on your iPhone.
2. Locate the Tab Switcher button (the icon depicting two overlapping squares) in the bottom-right corner of the browser window.
3. Instead of tapping it once, press and hold the Tab Switcher button for approximately two seconds.
4. A hidden context menu will appear on the screen.
5. Tap the option labelled Close All [X] Tabs (where X is the number of currently open tabs).
6. A confirmation prompt will slide up from the bottom of the screen. Tap Close All [X] Tabs again to confirm your decision.
Safari will immediately purge all open pages, returning the browser to a completely clean, fresh state.
