How to Disable Location Services Globally in Windows 11

The Geolocation Daemon

Windows 11 utilizes a global Location Service to pinpoint your physical coordinates. Unlike a mobile phone with a dedicated GPS chip, Windows calculates your location by scanning local Wi-Fi networks and cross-referencing your IP address with Microsoft’s cloud databases. It then shares this exact physical location with the Weather widget, the Maps app, the Edge browser, and third-party desktop applications. For desktop users who prioritize absolute geographical privacy and do not want their IP address correlated with a physical street address by Microsoft, this service must be destroyed.

How to Disable Location Services Globally

You can permanently sever the operating system’s ability to calculate your physical coordinates via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Under the “App permissions” section, click on Location.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch at the very top labeled Location services.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.
  6. Immediately below it, click the Clear button next to “Location history” to wipe any existing tracking data.

Absolute Geographical Anonymity

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for scanning Wi-Fi BSSIDs and transmitting them to the Microsoft positioning database. The operating system is now permanently blind to where it is located on Earth. If a website in Microsoft Edge or a third-party app attempts to request your location, the Windows kernel will instantly auto-reject the request in the background, returning a null value and guaranteeing absolute physical privacy for your desktop workstation.
