How to Disable Diagnostic Data Collection in Windows 11

The Telemetry Pipeline

Windows 11 constantly monitors how you use your computer. The operating system utilizes a background “Diagnostic Data” telemetry daemon that silently logs which apps you use, how long you use them, what websites you visit in the Edge browser, and details about your hardware configuration. This data is then compressed and periodically uploaded to Microsoft’s cloud servers. Microsoft claims this data is used to fix bugs and improve the operating system, but if you demand absolute control over your personal computing habits, you must sever this telemetry pipeline.

How to Disable Diagnostic Data Collection

You can permanently restrict the telemetry engine to its lowest possible legal state via the Privacy settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Locate the section labeled Diagnostic data and click to expand it.
  5. Toggle the switch labeled “Send optional diagnostic data” to the Off position.
  6. Scroll down slightly, expand the Delete diagnostic data section, and click the Delete button to permanently wipe the existing logs stored on Microsoft’s servers.

A Hardened Operating System

The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely sever the optional telemetry pipeline. Note: Microsoft does not allow Home or Pro users to turn off all telemetry; a tiny stream of “Required” security data will still be sent. However, by disabling the “Optional” feed, the operating system is now legally and technically barred from logging your app usage, browser history, and typing behavior. Your computer’s activity will remain local, guaranteeing a massive increase in privacy.
