How to Block Location Tracking (Geolocation) Globally in Chrome

The Geographic Fingerprint

Google Chrome features a built-in Geolocation API that allows websites to pinpoint your exact physical location on the globe. While this is useful for mapping applications like Google Maps or finding local restaurant deliveries, it is heavily abused by advertisers and retail websites to track your movements, adjust pricing based on your zip code, and build a geographic profile of your habits. If you refuse to allow the web browser to broadcast your coordinates to random servers, you must permanently paralyze the geolocation engine.

How to Block Location Tracking Globally

You can permanently sever the browser’s ability to calculate your coordinates via the Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Under the “Permissions” heading, click on Location.
  6. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to see your location.”

A Geographically Blind Browser

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever its internal connection to your operating system’s Wi-Fi triangulation and GPS services. The browser is now permanently blind to its physical location on Earth. It will instantly auto-reject every single background request from any website attempting to read your coordinates. You will never again see a “This site wants to know your location” pop-up, and you can browse the internet with absolute geographic anonymity.
