The Unwanted Pop-Up
Whenever your iPhone drops its connection to a known Wi-Fi network and falls back to cellular data, the operating system aggressively scans the immediate area for public hotspots. If it detects an open network (like at a coffee shop or airport), it instantly throws an “Ask to Join Networks” pop-up directly in the center of your screen. This completely interrupts whatever you are doing, forcing you to dismiss the prompt before you can continue typing a text or navigating a map. If you prefer to manually manage your Wi-Fi connections and refuse to be interrupted by random public networks, you must disable this aggressive scanner.
How to Turn Off the Wi-Fi Prompt
You can permanently suppress the network discovery pop-up via the Wi-Fi settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Wi-Fi near the top of the list.
- Scroll down below your list of available networks and tap on Ask to Join Networks.
- You will see three options: Off, Notify, and Ask.
- Tap on Off to permanently disable the feature (a blue checkmark will appear next to it).
Silent Background Connectivity
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for generating the UI prompt. When you walk past a coffee shop, your phone will still physically see the public Wi-Fi network, but it will remain completely silent. It will never again interrupt your screen with a pop-up, and it will strictly rely on your cellular data connection unless you intentionally open the Settings app and manually tap a network to join it.
