The Artificial Clicking
The “Digital Crown” is the physical scrolling wheel located on the side of the Apple Watch. Because it is a smooth, free-spinning dial, Apple utilizes the internal “Taptic Engine” to generate artificial physical resistance. As you spin the crown, the watch rapidly vibrates, creating a simulated “clicking” sensation that makes the dial feel like a mechanical watch gear. While this is an impressive engineering trick, the constant, rapid-fire vibration drains battery life and can feel annoying if you prefer a completely smooth, silent scrolling experience. You must disable the internal actuator specifically for this dial.
How to Turn Off Crown Haptics
You can permanently sever the connection between the scrolling wheel and the vibration motor via the Sound settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
- Scroll all the way down past the volume slider to the “Haptics” section.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Crown Haptics.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Smooth Scrolling
The change takes effect instantly. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the micro-vibration sequence associated with the Digital Crown. The next time you spin the wheel to scroll through a long email or navigate your app list, the dial will turn completely smoothly and silently, with absolutely zero physical resistance or artificial clicking sensations.
