The Privacy Leak
Windows 11 File Explorer features a section called “Quick Access” or “Home” that automatically displays a massive list of your “Recent files.” Every time you open a sensitive financial spreadsheet, a private photograph, or a confidential PDF document, Windows immediately pins a shortcut to that file directly onto the front page of the file manager. If you share your computer, project your screen during meetings, or simply have coworkers walking past your desk, this massive list of recently opened files is a severe privacy violation. You must force the operating system to suffer from amnesia and forget your file history.
How to Turn Off Recent Files History
You can permanently prevent File Explorer from tracking your opened documents via the Folder Options.
- Open any standard folder on your computer to launch File Explorer.
- Click the three horizontal dots (…) located on the top menu bar to open the More menu.
- Click on Options at the bottom of the drop-down list.
- In the new window that appears, ensure you are on the General tab.
- Look for the “Privacy” section at the bottom.
- Uncheck the box labeled “Show recently used files.”
- Click the Clear button to immediately wipe the existing history.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
A Sterile File Manager
The change is instantaneous. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background tracking service responsible for logging your file access. The “Recent” section will instantly vanish from File Explorer. From this moment forward, you can open the most sensitive documents on your hard drive, close them, and open File Explorer again without a single trace of your activity remaining on the screen.
