How to Disable Location Services Globally on iPhone

The Ultimate Privacy Lock

By default, your iPhone acts as a highly accurate GPS tracker. Dozens of installed applications—from weather apps and delivery services to social media platforms and photography tools—constantly ping the internal GPS chip to log your exact physical coordinates. While this is necessary for turn-by-turn navigation, it is a massive privacy liability if you are attempting to travel incognito or if you simply refuse to allow third-party corporations to build a database of your daily movements. If you want absolute, verifiable geographical privacy, you cannot simply trust apps to behave; you must physically cut the power to the iPhone’s location engine.

How to Turn Off Location Services Globally

You can completely sever the operating system’s connection to the GPS hardware via the Privacy settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. At the very top of the screen, tap on Location Services.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Location Services.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position.
  6. A severe warning will pop up explaining that all apps will lose access. Tap Turn Off to confirm.

Total Disconnection

The change is instantaneous and highly destructive to app functionality. iOS will completely terminate the internal GPS driver. Every single application on your phone—including Apple Maps, Google Maps, Uber, and the Camera app—will instantly lose the ability to triangulate your position. Your phone will become completely geographically blind. The only exception to this global lock is the “Find My” service; if you place your device into “Lost Mode” from another computer, Apple will temporarily override this setting to help you recover the stolen phone.
