The Granular Privacy Control
When you grant an application access to your iPhone’s GPS, iOS defaults to providing the app with your “Precise Location.” This means the application can pinpoint your exact physical coordinates down to the specific house or building you are standing in. While this level of extreme accuracy is absolutely mandatory for navigation apps like Google Maps or ride-sharing apps like Uber, it is a massive overreach for a local weather app or a retail store app. A weather app only needs to know your general city to provide an accurate forecast. You must strip these non-essential applications of their pinpoint accuracy.
How to Turn Off Precise Location
You can revoke the exact GPS coordinates for individual applications via the Privacy & Security settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
- At the top of the menu, tap on Location Services.
- Scroll down the list and tap on the specific app you want to restrict (e.g., a Weather app or a Social Media app).
- At the bottom of that app’s specific menu, locate the toggle switch labeled Precise Location.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
General Proximity Only
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the application’s connection to the raw GPS hardware data. Instead, iOS will artificially blur the location coordinates before handing them to the app. The application will now only receive a generalized, multi-mile radius indicating the approximate city or neighborhood you are in, ensuring your exact street address remains completely private while still allowing the app to function.
