How to Disable the Sticky Keys Shortcut in Windows 11

The Gaming Interruption

Windows has historically included an accessibility feature called “Sticky Keys,” which allows users with physical disabilities to type complex keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+Alt+Delete) by pressing one key at a time rather than holding them all down simultaneously. To make this feature easy to enable, Windows maps a shortcut to the Shift key: if you tap Shift five times in rapid succession, a massive warning box pops up asking if you want to turn Sticky Keys on. While helpful for accessibility, this shortcut is an absolute nightmare for PC gamers who frequently rapidly tap the Shift key to sprint or dodge in fast-paced action games. Tapping it five times instantly minimizes the game and brings up the popup. You must disable this shortcut.

How to Turn Off the Sticky Keys Shortcut

You can unbind the Shift key trigger via the accessibility settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accessibility.
  3. Scroll down to the “Interaction” section and click on Keyboard.
  4. Look for the section labeled “Sticky keys” and click on the small arrow icon (>) on the far right side of that box to expand the advanced menu.
  5. Find the toggle switch labeled Keyboard shortcut for Sticky keys.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position.

Uninterrupted Gaming

The change takes effect instantly. You can immediately return to your video game. You can now aggressively tap the Shift key fifty times in a row, and the operating system will completely ignore it. The game will no longer minimize, and the incredibly annoying pop-up box is permanently banished.
