How to Disable Syncing in Google Chrome

The Cloud Connection

When you log into a Google service like Gmail, Google Chrome aggressively asks you to turn on “Sync.” If you agree, Chrome begins constantly uploading your entire web browsing history, your saved passwords, your bookmarks, and even your open tabs directly to Google’s cloud servers. The intended benefit is that you can log into Chrome on a different computer and instantly have all your data. However, if you are using a shared family computer or a work laptop, you absolutely do not want your personal browsing history merging with the local machine. To maintain total privacy, you must sever the connection to the cloud.

How to Turn Off Chrome Sync

You can completely disable data synchronization via the browser profile settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on You and Google.
  4. At the very top of the main window, you will see your profile picture and the words “Sync is on.”
  5. Click the large Turn off button next to your profile.
  6. A pop-up warning will appear. Ensure you do not check the box to clear your local data (unless you want to delete everything).
  7. Click the blue Turn off button to confirm.

A Localized Browser

The change is instantaneous. The words will change to “Sync is off.” Chrome will immediately stop transmitting your browsing data to Google’s servers. Every bookmark you create and every website you visit from this point forward will remain strictly isolated and stored entirely on your local hard drive.
