The Visual Clutter
The Windows 11 taskbar is designed to be a clean, minimalist launcher for your applications. However, certain communication applications, particularly Microsoft Teams, Slack, or Discord, utilize “notification badges.” When you receive a message in one of these programs, a tiny red dot or a number appears directly on top of the application’s icon pinned to your taskbar. While this is helpful for ensuring you never miss a work email, it creates a constant sense of visual anxiety. If you prefer to check your messages on your own schedule rather than having your taskbar constantly screaming for your attention with red dots, you can disable the badge system entirely.
How to Turn Off Taskbar Badges
You can strip the notification counters off your icons via the taskbar personalization settings.
- Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Taskbar (at the bottom of your screen).
- Click on Taskbar settings in the small pop-up menu.
- A new Settings window will open. Look for the section labeled Taskbar behaviors (you may need to scroll down to find it).
- Click to expand the “Taskbar behaviors” section.
- Look for the checkbox labeled “Show badges on taskbar apps.”
- Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.
A Cleaner Launcher
The change takes effect instantly. Any red dots or unread message counters currently sitting on your taskbar icons will immediately vanish. The applications will continue to receive messages normally in the background, but they are now explicitly forbidden from altering their taskbar icon to get your attention, leaving you with a clean, stress-free desktop.
