The Massive Text Box
By default, Windows 11 dedicates a massive portion of the central taskbar to a sprawling white text box simply labeled “Search.” For users working on smaller 13-inch laptops, this massive pill-shaped box consumes almost a quarter of the available taskbar real estate, severely limiting the number of application icons you can pin to your screen. Furthermore, the search box is entirely redundant; you can simply tap the Windows Key on your keyboard and start typing to instantly initiate a search anyway. If you want a cleaner, more minimalist desktop that maximizes space for your actual productivity applications, you can collapse the massive text box into a tiny, unobtrusive magnifying glass icon.
How to Hide the Taskbar Search Box
You can alter the visual behavior of the search feature via the main Personalization settings.
- Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Taskbar.
- Click on Taskbar settings in the small pop-up menu.
- A new Settings window will open. Look at the very top section labeled Taskbar items.
- Locate the Search option.
- Click the dropdown menu next to Search (which is likely currently set to “Search box”).
- Select Search icon only from the dropdown list.
The Clean Result
The change takes effect instantly without requiring a system reboot. The massive white text box will immediately vanish, and your pinned application icons will slide inward to fill the gap. In its place, a single, minimalist magnifying glass icon will remain. You can still click this tiny icon to open the full visual search menu, but your taskbar will look significantly cleaner and provide much more room for multitasking.
