The Persistent Microphone
The Apple Watch features a dedicated “Noise” app designed to protect your hearing. To make this feature work, the watch must periodically activate its built-in microphone throughout the day to sample the ambient noise levels in your environment (which Apple refers to as “Environmental Sound Measurements”). If it detects that you are standing in a loud concert or next to a construction site exceeding 90 decibels, it will tap your wrist to warn you of potential hearing damage. While the watch does not record or save this audio, firing up the microphone constantly in the background takes a noticeable toll on battery life. If you do not work in a loud environment, you can safely turn this constant monitoring off.
How to Turn Off Environmental Sound Measurements
You manage the Noise app’s background permissions from the companion Watch app on your paired iPhone.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Ensure you are on the My Watch tab at the bottom left of the screen.
- Scroll down the list of installed applications and tap on Noise.
- At the very top of the menu, look for the toggle switch labeled Environmental Sound Measurements.
- Tap the switch to turn it Off (the green background will disappear).
The Battery and Privacy Benefits
Disabling this master switch has two immediate benefits. First, your Apple Watch will stop secretly pinging the microphone every few minutes, noticeably extending your battery life, especially on older watch models. Second, you completely eliminate any privacy anxiety associated with having an active, internet-connected microphone constantly sampling your environment. (Note: You can still manually open the Noise app from your watch face if you ever specifically want to check the decibel level of a loud room; the app will simply ask for temporary microphone permission before taking the reading).
