The Cluttered Taskbar Confusion
When Microsoft launched Windows 11, they drastically redesigned the taskbar to look more like macOS. One of the most controversial changes was forcing the “Combine taskbar buttons” feature on for everyone. This meant that if you opened five different Microsoft Word documents, they would no longer appear as five distinct, readable buttons at the bottom of your screen. Instead, they were all forcibly collapsed into a single, tiny Word icon. To find the specific document you wanted, you had to hover your mouse over the icon, wait for a small thumbnail preview to appear, and then carefully click the correct one. For power users, this drastically slowed down multitasking. After immense public backlash, Microsoft finally added a way to ungroup these icons.
How to Enable “Never Combine” in Windows 11
You can restore the classic Windows XP/Windows 7 behavior through the main Personalization settings (Note: You must have installed the Windows 11 “Moment 4” update or later for this option to be visible).
- Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Taskbar.
- Click on Taskbar settings in the small pop-up menu.
- Scroll down the settings window and click to expand the Taskbar behaviors section.
- Scroll down until you find the dropdown menu labeled Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels.
- Click the dropdown menu (which is likely set to “Always”) and change it to Never.
The Classic Workflow Restored
The change is instantaneous. The single, tiny icons will instantly expand horizontally across your taskbar. Every single open application and document will now have its own dedicated, wide button featuring both the application icon and the actual text title of the window (e.g., “Quarterly Report.docx”). You can now instantly see exactly what you are working on and switch between specific documents with a single, fast mouse click.
