How to Disable Tab Hover Cards in Google Chrome

The Annoying Pop-up Thumbnails

Google Chrome features a UI element called “Tab Hover Cards.” When you have multiple tabs open at the top of your screen, hovering your mouse cursor over any background tab will cause a large, rectangular card to pop up, displaying the full page title and a small image preview of the website’s contents. While Google designed this to help users navigate a cluttered browser window, it is incredibly intrusive. If you are quickly moving your mouse up to the address bar, simply brushing past the tabs will trigger a chaotic flashing of preview cards. If you prefer the classic, clean browser experience where tabs just act like normal buttons, you must disable the hover card feature.

How to Turn Off Hover Cards via Chrome Flags

Google has removed the standard toggle switch for this feature in recent updates, forcing you to disable it via the hidden experimental settings menu.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. In the URL address bar at the top, type the following exactly as written:
  3. chrome://flags
  4. Press Enter to load the hidden dashboard.
  5. In the “Search flags” box at the top of the screen, type: Tab Hover Card Images
  6. The specific experiment will highlight in yellow. Click the dropdown menu next to it (which currently says “Default”).
  7. Select Disabled from the list.
  8. Chrome will prompt you to apply the changes. Click the blue Relaunch button at the bottom of the screen.

What Changes?

Once Chrome restarts, the massive image previews are completely gone. When you hover over a background tab, the browser will revert to the classic Windows tooltip behavior, showing only a small, unobtrusive line of text containing the page title, completely eliminating the visual clutter and making the browser feel much snappier.
