How to See the Exact Time a Message Was Read in iMessage

The Hidden iMessage Timestamp

When you send an iMessage (the blue bubbles) to another iPhone user, the app provides a clean, minimalist interface. By default, iOS only displays a single timestamp at the very top of a new conversation or when a significant amount of time has passed between messages. Furthermore, while it will display a tiny “Read” or “Delivered” receipt beneath your most recent message, it does not explicitly tell you exactly what time that specific message was sent or opened, making it difficult to determine if someone has been ignoring you for ten minutes or two hours. However, Apple built a hidden gesture into the app that reveals the exact-to-the-minute timestamp for every single bubble on the screen.

How to Reveal the Exact Timestamps

This gesture works on any iPhone or iPad running a modern version of iOS, and it does not require changing any system settings.

  1. Open the Messages app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on any active conversation.
  3. Place your finger anywhere on the main message screen (directly on a blue bubble or on the empty background space).
  4. Swipe left and hold. You must drag your finger from the right edge of the screen toward the left and keep your finger pressed against the glass.

Reading the Hidden Data

As you hold the screen to the left, the entire column of text bubbles will shift over. On the far right side of the screen, a hidden column of grey text will instantly appear. This column displays the precise timestamp (e.g., 10:42 AM) for every single message you sent and every single message you received in that thread. As soon as you lift your finger off the glass, the bubbles will snap back into their default position, hiding the timestamps again to maintain the clean aesthetic of the app.
