When you insert a Table of Contents in Google Docs, it is generated from the heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3) applied throughout your document. Google Docs does not automatically update this Table of Contents in real time as you add, remove, or rename headings. However, it does place a conspicuous “Update table of contents” button at the top of the TOC block that, when accidentally clicked (which happens frequently when trying to click just above or below it), regenerates the entire table. This can silently overwrite manual formatting tweaks you applied to the TOC — such as custom page numbers, adjusted indentations, or entries for sections that do not use formal heading styles.
Managing Table of Contents Behaviour
To stop Google Docs from automatically overwriting your carefully formatted Table of Contents when the update button is accidentally triggered, you must understand how the TOC interacts with heading styles and adopt a protective workflow.
Google Docs does not offer a “lock” or “freeze” option for the Table of Contents. Every time you click the circular refresh icon that appears when you hover over the TOC, it regenerates based on the current heading structure. To protect your formatting, the most effective approach is to convert the TOC into static text. Click anywhere inside the Table of Contents block. A small toolbar will appear above it. Click the three vertical dots (more options) on this toolbar. If an option to convert to static text or “Unlink” is available, select it. If this option is not present in your version, you can manually achieve the same result: select the entire TOC text, copy it (Ctrl + C), delete the original TOC block, then paste the copied text back using Ctrl + Shift + V (Paste without formatting). This inserts the TOC entries as plain, static text that will never auto-update, giving you full manual control over the content.
