How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Deleting Offline Files

The Sync Center Dilemma

Windows 11 includes a feature called Sync Center (often interacting with Offline Files), designed for users who frequently connect to network drives or corporate servers. It allows you to cache copies of network files locally so you can continue working on them even when you disconnect from the network. Once you reconnect, Windows is supposed to seamlessly sync your changes back to the server. However, if there is a conflict—for instance, if someone else modified the file on the server while you were offline—Windows 11’s default conflict resolution might automatically delete your local offline copy in favour of the server version, causing you to lose all the work you did while disconnected.

Protecting Your Local Offline Cache

To stop Windows 11 from automatically deleting your local offline files during a sync conflict, you need to adjust how the Sync Center handles data collisions, forcing it to keep both versions or prompt you for a decision.

Open the traditional Control Panel (you can find it by typing “Control Panel” into the Start menu search). In the top-right corner, change the “View by” setting to Large icons or Small icons to see all options. Click on Sync Center. In the left-hand sidebar of the Sync Center window, click on Manage offline files. A new dialog box will appear. Navigate to the General tab and ensure Offline Files is enabled. If you are experiencing automatic deletions, it is usually because of a background GPO (Group Policy Object). To override this on a personal machine, you must use the Registry Editor. Press Windows Key + R, type regedit, and press Enter. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\NetCache. If a DWORD named SyncConflictsHandling exists, right-click it, select Modify, and change its value to 0 (to prompt you) or delete the key entirely. This stops the aggressive, automatic deletion of your local cache during background syncs.
