How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Deleting Notifications

The Disappearing Alerts

Windows 11 features a unified Notification Center (accessible by clicking the date and time on the taskbar) designed to collect all your system alerts, emails, and app messages in one place. However, to prevent this list from becoming an infinitely scrolling wall of text, Windows is configured to automatically delete notifications after a certain period or when the list reaches a specific capacity limit. If you step away from your desk for a few hours and return to a busy system, older but potentially critical notifications—like a missed message from your boss or a low-disk-space warning—might have been silently purged from the Action Center before you ever had a chance to read them.

Extending Notification Lifespans

To ensure you never miss an important alert and stop Windows 11 from automatically deleting your notifications from the Action Center prematurely, you must adjust the display timeout and priority settings.

Press the Windows key + I to open Settings. Click on Accessibility in the left sidebar, then select Visual effects. Look for the dropdown menu labelled Dismiss notifications after this amount of time. By default, this is set to 5 seconds. Change this to a much longer duration (up to 5 minutes) to ensure pop-ups stay on screen. Next, to stop the Action Center from overwriting old alerts, you must prioritize specific apps. Go back to System > Notifications. Scroll down to your list of apps. Click on the name of a critical app (e.g., your email client or Teams). Change its Priority of notifications in notification center from “Normal” to High or Top. High-priority notifications are pinned and will not be automatically deleted to make room for generic system alerts.
