The Phantom Workspace
Windows 11 heavily promotes its virtual desktop feature (Task View) to help users organize their windows. However, a common frustration arises when you move your mouse cursor to the bottom of the screen to interact with the Taskbar, and the operating system suddenly and violently swipes you to an entirely different virtual desktop. This happens because, by default, Windows 11 might automatically switch desktops if you simply hover your cursor over the Task View icon for too long, or if a background application on another desktop demands focus, completely derailing your current train of thought.
Disabling Hover Switching
To ensure your workspace remains stable and stop Windows 11 from automatically switching virtual desktops without a deliberate click, you must adjust the Taskbar behaviors.
First, if the Task View icon itself is the problem, you can hide it. Press the Windows key, type Taskbar settings, and press Enter. Under the “Taskbar items” section, locate Task view and toggle the switch to Off. You can still access virtual desktops securely by pressing Windows key + Tab. Secondly, to prevent apps from pulling you across desktops, press the Windows key, type Settings, and hit Enter. Go to System > Multitasking. Expand the Desktops section. Look for the dropdown menus governing how windows are displayed. Ensure that settings like “On the taskbar, show all the open windows” are set to Only on the desktop I’m using to enforce strict separation between your workspaces.
