The Shifting Sidebar
In Windows 11, the File Explorer utilizes a left-hand navigation pane to help you quickly jump between drives, network locations, and pinned folders. By default, Windows includes a feature designed to keep you oriented: as you click through folders in the main right-hand window, the left-hand navigation pane automatically scrolls and expands its folder tree to highlight exactly where you are in the directory structure. While theoretically helpful, if you are working deep inside a complex project with dozens of nested folders, this auto-expansion rapidly clutters the sidebar, pushing your essential “Quick Access” pins completely off the screen.
Locking the Navigation Tree
To keep your sidebar clean, stable, and focused only on the folders you explicitly want to see, you must stop Windows 11 from automatically expanding folders in the navigation pane.
Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E). Click the three horizontal dots (…) located on the top menu bar, near the right side, and select Options from the dropdown menu. A “Folder Options” dialogue box will appear. Click on the View tab at the top. Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the “Advanced settings” list until you find the section labelled Navigation pane. Look for the checkbox explicitly named Expand to open folder. If your sidebar is currently shifting around on its own, this box will be checked. Click the box to uncheck it. Click Apply and then OK. Your left-hand sidebar will now remain completely static, regardless of how deep you navigate into a drive.
