The Shifting Wallpaper
Windows 11 features a visually dynamic lock screen powered by “Windows Spotlight.” By default, every day Microsoft downloads a new, high-resolution photograph from Bing—ranging from stunning landscapes to macro nature shots—and automatically applies it as your lock screen background. While many users enjoy the daily surprise, others find it distracting or simply prefer a consistent, personalized aesthetic. Furthermore, Windows Spotlight occasionally injects “fun facts,” tips, or even subtle advertisements for Microsoft services directly onto the lock screen image, which can feel intrusive before you even log into your computer.
Locking Your Preferred Image
To establish a consistent, ad-free login experience and stop Windows 11 from automatically changing the lock screen background, you must switch from the Spotlight service to a static image.
Press the Windows Key, type Settings, and hit Enter. In the left-hand navigation pane, select Personalization. On the right side, click on the section labelled Lock screen. Look for the dropdown menu explicitly named Personalize your lock screen. By default, this is likely set to “Windows spotlight.” Click the dropdown and change it to either Picture (to select a single, static image from your hard drive) or Slideshow (if you want to cycle through a specific folder of your own photos). Once you select “Picture,” a “Recent images” row will appear below it, along with a Browse photos button, allowing you to permanently lock in the exact wallpaper you want to see every time you boot up.
