The Blanking Disruption
By default, Ubuntu’s power management system is configured to aggressively conserve energy by blanking the screen and suspending the session after five minutes of inactivity. While this is excellent for laptops running on battery power, it is disastrous if you are delivering a presentation, watching a long video, or monitoring a dashboard where you are not actively touching the mouse or keyboard. Having your screen suddenly go black in the middle of a meeting forces you to scramble for the mouse and enter your password to unlock the session, completely breaking your workflow.
Using the Caffeine Extension
While you can manually dive into the power settings and turn off screen blanking entirely, a more elegant solution is to use the “Caffeine” GNOME shell extension. This utility allows you to temporarily disable all screen blanking and suspension protocols with a single click in your top bar, specifically when you need the screen to stay awake.
Open your terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and install the extension manager by typing: sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-manager and pressing Enter. Once installed, launch the “Extension Manager” application from your app grid. Click on the Browse tab at the top of the window, search for Caffeine, and click the blue Install button next to the result. Once activated, you will see a small coffee cup icon appear in the top right corner of your Ubuntu top bar. Whenever you are about to start a presentation, simply click the coffee cup icon. It will emit “steam,” indicating that your system is now caffeinated; Ubuntu will completely ignore its idle timers and your screen will stay on indefinitely until you click the cup again to turn it off.
