The Clustered Downloads
Google Chrome recently overhauled its download manager. Instead of the familiar bar at the bottom of the screen, downloads now appear in a small “bubble” next to the address bar. When you open the full `chrome://downloads` history page, you will notice a significant change: Chrome now automatically groups your past downloads by date (e.g., “Today,” “Yesterday,” “Last Week”). If you are a heavy user trying to locate a specific installer you downloaded a few days ago, scrolling through these massive, expanding date blocks can be significantly more tedious than scanning a simple, continuous chronological list.
Restoring the Linear List
To remove the date-based headers and stop Google Chrome from automatically grouping your downloads history, you must disable the specific UI flag controlling this feature.
Open a new tab in your Google Chrome browser. Click inside the address bar, type chrome://flags, and press Enter to access the experimental features page. In the search box at the top of the screen, type exactly Download History WebUI. You might see several related flags. Look specifically for the flag that mentions “Download History WebUI grouping” or “Download bubble.” If you see a flag named Enable Download Bubble, ensure it is set to Disabled. If you are using a newer version of Chrome where the bubble is mandatory, look for any flag containing the word grouping within the downloads section and set it to Disabled. Click the blue Relaunch button at the bottom of the screen. When Chrome restarts, your `chrome://downloads` page will return to a strictly linear layout.
