How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Expanding the Taskbar System Tray

The Cluttered Corner

The System Tray (also known as the notification area) in the bottom right corner of the Windows 11 taskbar is designed to house critical system icons like volume, network status, and the clock. To keep this area tidy, Windows hides less critical background application icons inside a small overflow menu, accessible by clicking an upward-facing arrow. However, depending on your system configuration or a recent update, Windows 11 may begin automatically pulling every single background app icon out of that overflow menu and placing them directly onto the taskbar. This permanently expands the system tray, wasting valuable taskbar space and creating a cluttered visual mess.

Restoring the Overflow Menu

To force Windows 11 to tuck these icons back into the hidden overflow menu, you must explicitly tell the operating system which icons are allowed to remain visible. You cannot simply drag and drop them back into the menu on newer builds; you must use the Settings app.

Right-click on any empty space on your taskbar and select Taskbar settings. The Settings application will open directly to the Personalisation menu. Scroll down and click on the section labelled Other system tray icons to expand it. You will see a master toggle switch at the top labelled Hidden icon menu. Ensure this is turned On. Below this, you will see a list of every background application currently running. Simply go down the list and turn Off the toggle for any app you wish to hide. As you turn them off, they will instantly disappear from the main taskbar and relocate securely inside the upward-arrow overflow menu.
