The Smart Folder Distraction
In macOS, “Recents” is not an actual physical folder on your hard drive. It is a “Smart Folder” continuously generated by Spotlight search that dynamically displays the files you have opened, modified, or downloaded most recently, regardless of where they are actually saved. By default, Apple pins a shortcut to this Recents view at the very top of your Finder sidebar, aiming to give you rapid access to your current working documents without forcing you to remember their exact folder path.
While useful for some, it is a privacy and organizational nightmare for others. Because it lumps every recently touched file into one massive grid, it completely ignores your careful folder structures. More importantly, if you share your screen on a Zoom call or let a coworker briefly use your Mac, the Recents folder will immediately broadcast the thumbnails of every private document, downloaded image, or confidential spreadsheet you just looked at. If you prefer a strict, manually organized file system and want to protect your privacy, you should remove this shortcut.
How to Hide the Recents Folder
You can remove the “Recents” shortcut from your navigation pane via the Finder Settings.
- Click the Finder icon (the blue and white face) in your Dock.
- Look at the top menu bar, click on Finder, and select Settings… (or Preferences).
- In the Settings window that opens, click the Sidebar tab at the top.
- Look under the “Favorites” section for a list of your pinned folders (like Applications, Desktop, etc.).
- Locate the checkbox for Recents.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Close the Settings window.
The “Recents” icon will instantly disappear from your sidebar. (Note: You might also want to change the “New Finder windows show:” setting on the General tab to open to your Home folder instead of Recents).
