The Taskbar Visual Feedback
Windows 10 relies heavily on small animations to make the operating system feel alive and responsive. The “Animations in the taskbar” setting controls several of these micro-interactions at the bottom of your screen. Specifically, when this is enabled, clicking an application icon on the taskbar will cause it to briefly flash or pulse. Furthermore, when an application requires your attention (like a new message arriving in a chat app), its taskbar icon will slowly glow or blink in a soft, animated gradient. Progress bars for downloads or file copies will also feature a smooth, sweeping highlight effect.
While these animations provide excellent visual feedback, they can be highly distracting, especially if you are easily pulled away from your work by blinking lights at the edge of your vision. Additionally, on highly constrained systems like virtual machines or very old laptops running on battery power, rendering these continuous background animations consumes unnecessary CPU cycles and graphical resources. If you prefer a completely static, distraction-free environment, you should disable these effects.
How to Turn Off Taskbar Animations
You can force the taskbar to remain static via the advanced system performance settings.
- Click the Start button and type Advanced system settings.
- Select View advanced system settings from the search results. This directly opens the System Properties window to the Advanced tab.
- Under the Performance section near the top, click the Settings… button.
- A new “Performance Options” window will appear. Ensure you are on the Visual Effects tab.
- Scroll through the list of effects and locate the checkbox labelled Animations in the taskbar.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
From now on, taskbar icons will react to clicks instantly without flashing, and background apps demanding attention will simply change to a solid highlight color rather than pulsing or glowing.
