The Hover Animation Delay
Windows 10 uses ToolTips extensively to provide quick contextual information. When you hover your mouse cursor over an icon on the taskbar, a button in a toolbar, or a file in File Explorer, a small yellow or white box appears containing a description or the full name of the item. By default, the operating system controls the appearance of these boxes using the “Fade or slide ToolTips into view” visual effect setting. This ensures the little text box smoothly transitions into existence rather than just popping onto the screen.
While this fading animation is visually pleasing and contributes to a modern UI feel, it introduces a mandatory rendering delay. You must wait a fraction of a second for the animation to complete before the text is fully opaque and readable. For users who need to quickly scan multiple files or buttons by rapidly moving their mouse, this forced waiting period makes the OS feel sluggish. If you want instant information delivery without the unnecessary graphical flair, you should turn this effect off.
How to Turn Off ToolTip Animations
You can force ToolTips to appear instantly via the advanced system performance settings.
- Click the Start button and type Advanced system settings.
- Select View advanced system settings from the search results. This directly opens the System Properties window to the Advanced tab.
- Under the Performance section near the top, click the Settings… button.
- A new “Performance Options” window will open. Ensure you are on the Visual Effects tab.
- Scroll through the list of visual effects and locate the checkbox labelled Fade or slide ToolTips into view.
- Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
From now on, whenever you hover over an element that triggers a ToolTip, the informational box will instantly snap onto the screen, allowing you to read it without waiting for an animation.
