How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Adding Space Before Paragraph

The Invisible Spacing Issue

Google Docs allows you to define complex formatting rules for paragraphs to ensure your document looks professional without requiring manual adjustment. One common feature is the ability to automatically add blank space before or after a paragraph. When “Add space before paragraph” is enabled, every time you press the “Enter” key to start a new paragraph, Docs inserts extra vertical whitespace above it. You won’t see a blank line character that you can delete; the space is simply baked into the formatting of the text block itself.

While this is excellent for writing formal essays or reports where clear visual separation between blocks of text is required, it can ruin the formatting of tighter documents. If you are trying to write an address block, format a poem, or create a dense list where lines need to sit closely together, this automatic spacing makes the text look disconnected and bloated. To keep your lines tight and control exactly when spacing occurs (by manually pressing Enter twice), you must disable this automatic formatting.

How to Remove Automatic Paragraph Spacing

You can remove this invisible vertical spacing via the formatting toolbar.

1. Open a document in Google Docs.
2. Highlight the text where you want to remove the spacing (or press Ctrl + A on Windows / Cmd + A on Mac to select the entire document).
3. Look at the top toolbar and locate the Line & paragraph spacing icon (it looks like three horizontal lines with a vertical double-arrow next to it). Click it.
4. In the dropdown menu that appears, look near the bottom.
5. If the spacing is currently active, you will see an option that says Remove space before paragraph. Click this option.
6. (Note: You may also want to click “Remove space after paragraph” if that is active as well, to ensure completely tight line spacing).
7. To prevent this from happening to new text, you can set this tighter spacing as your default style. Go to Format > Paragraph styles > Normal text > Update ‘Normal text’ to match.

The extra vertical padding will be instantly stripped away, pulling your paragraphs tightly together for a cleaner, denser look.
