How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Starting a New List

The Auto-Formatting Annoyance

Google Docs is designed to anticipate what you are trying to write. One of its most prevalent automated features is list generation. If you type a number followed by a period (e.g., “1.”) and press the Spacebar, Docs assumes you are starting a numbered list. It will automatically indent the text and apply formal list formatting. When you press Enter, it will automatically generate “2.” on the next line.

While this is helpful when outlining a document, it can be incredibly frustrating if you are simply starting a paragraph with a number (e.g., “1. The first point to consider is…”). If you want the text flush against the left margin without the automatic indentation and subsequent list continuation, you are forced to constantly press Ctrl + Z (Undo) to revert the aggressive formatting. If you prefer to manually control your list formatting, you can turn this feature off entirely.

How to Stop Automatic List Generation

You can disable the predictive list formatting in the Preferences menu.

1. Open a document in Google Docs.
2. Look at the top toolbar and click on Tools.
3. Select Preferences from the dropdown menu.
4. In the Preferences window, ensure you are on the General tab.
5. Look down the list of checkboxes for the option labelled Automatically detect lists.
6. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.
7. Click the blue OK button to save your changes.

Moving forward, if you type “1.” and press the spacebar, Google Docs will simply leave it as plain text. If you want a formal list, you will now need to manually click the “Numbered list” or “Bulleted list” icons in the formatting toolbar at the top of the screen.
