By default, when you finish typing data into a cell in Microsoft Excel and press the Enter key, your cursor automatically jumps down to the cell immediately below it. This behavior is designed to help users quickly enter long columns of data (like a list of names or prices).
However, if you are building a complex dashboard, formatting a specific cell, or inputting data horizontally across a row rather than vertically down a column, this automatic downward jump is highly frustrating. You constantly have to use your mouse or the arrow keys to navigate back up.
Fortunately, you can completely disable this behavior, or change the direction the cursor jumps when you press Enter.
How to Stop the Cursor from Moving
You can change this setting in the Excel Options menu:
- Open Microsoft Excel on your computer.
- Click on File in the top-left corner of the ribbon.
- Click Options at the very bottom of the left sidebar. (You may need to click “More…” first).
- In the Excel Options window, select Advanced from the left-hand navigation pane.
- The very first option at the top of the Advanced menu is a checkbox labeled After pressing Enter, move selection.
- Uncheck this box entirely.
- Click OK at the bottom of the window to apply your changes.
With this box unchecked, pressing Enter will confirm your data input but your cursor will remain locked on the exact same cell.
How to Change the Jump Direction
If you don’t want the cursor to stay put, but rather want it to move to the right (which is incredibly useful for entering data row by row), you can leave the box checked and change the “Direction” dropdown menu directly below it from “Down” to Right.
