The Annoying Quit Delay
On macOS, the keyboard shortcut to completely exit an application is Command + Q. Because this shortcut is located immediately next to Command + W (the shortcut to close a single tab or window), it is notoriously easy to accidentally quit your entire browser when you only meant to close a single webpage. To prevent this catastrophic loss of open tabs, Google Chrome for Mac includes a specific safety feature called “Warn Before Quitting.”
When this feature is enabled, simply pressing Command + Q is not enough. An overlay appears on the screen instructing you to “Hold Command-Q to Quit.” You must hold the keys down for a full second or two before the browser actually closes. While this saves you from accidental closures, it completely disrupts the muscle memory of power users who want their browser to instantly shut down the moment they hit the shortcut. If you trust your typing accuracy, you can disable this safety delay.
How to Disable the “Warn Before Quitting” Delay
This setting is easily toggled directly from the Chrome menu bar.
- Open Google Chrome on your Mac.
- Look at the very top of your screen at the macOS menu bar. Click on the word Chrome in the top-left corner.
- Look down the dropdown menu for the option labelled Warn Before Quitting (it is usually located right above the actual “Quit Google Chrome” option).
- If there is a checkmark next to “Warn Before Quitting,” the safety delay is currently active.
- Click on “Warn Before Quitting” to uncheck it.
The next time you press Command + Q, Google Chrome will instantly and abruptly shut down, bypassing the overlay prompt entirely.
