The Left-Side Clutter
Google Docs features a “Document Outline” tool, which appears as a panel on the left side of your screen. It automatically scans your document for headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.) and generates a clickable table of contents, allowing you to quickly jump between sections. By default, Google Docs often tries to be helpful by automatically opening this outline panel when it detects you are working on a structured document.
While this is fantastic for navigating 50-page reports, it is entirely unnecessary and wastes valuable screen space if you are writing a simple one-page letter, a short essay, or if you prefer a distraction-free writing environment. Having the outline pop open automatically reduces your horizontal typing space. You can disable this automatic behavior and keep the outline permanently hidden until you specifically request it.
How to Disable the Automatic Outline Display
You can hide the outline directly from the View menu.
- Open a document in Google Docs.
- Click on the View menu in the top menu bar.
- Look down the dropdown list for the option labelled Show outline.
- If there is a checkmark next to “Show outline,” the left-hand panel is currently visible or allowed to appear automatically.
- Click on “Show outline” to uncheck it.
The document outline panel on the left side of your screen will immediately slide away, giving you a wider, cleaner writing space. Google Docs will remember this preference, and the outline will no longer automatically pop open to distract you. (If you ever need it back, you can simply go back to View > Show outline, or click the small document icon that sometimes appears in the top-left margin).
