How to Disable the Pinch to Zoom Feature on a Mac Trackpad

The glass trackpad on a MacBook is widely considered the best in the industry, largely due to its expansive support for multi-touch gestures. One of the most frequently used gestures is “Pinch to Zoom”—placing your thumb and index finger on the trackpad and spreading them apart to magnify a webpage or image, just like you would on an iPhone screen. However, if you are performing delicate design work, or if you simply have heavy hands and find yourself accidentally zooming in on documents when trying to scroll, this hypersensitive feature can be incredibly frustrating. Fortunately, macOS allows you to turn it off.

How to Disable Pinch to Zoom

Disabling this gesture requires a quick adjustment within the main System Settings panel for your trackpad.

  1. Click the Apple Logo () in the top-left corner of your Mac’s menu bar.
  2. Select System Settings… (or System Preferences… if you are using an older version of macOS) from the drop-down menu.
  3. Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Trackpad.
  4. In the main window on the right, you will see three tabs along the top. Click on the Scroll & Zoom tab.
  5. Look for the setting labelled Zoom in or out. (Directly beneath it, the description will clarify that this controls the “Pinch with two fingers” action).
  6. Toggle the switch next to it to the off position.

What Does This Affect?

The change is applied immediately across the entire operating system. You will no longer be able to pinch-to-zoom in Safari, Preview, Maps, or third-party applications.

Important Note: Disabling “Pinch to Zoom” does not disable “Smart Zoom.” If you have Smart Zoom enabled in the same settings menu, you can still double-tap (not click, just a light tap) the trackpad with two fingers to instantly zoom in on a block of text in a web browser. Many users prefer leaving Smart Zoom enabled while turning Pinch to Zoom off, as it provides a more controlled magnification method that is much harder to trigger accidentally.
