If you use a Windows 11 tablet, a 2-in-1 convertible laptop, or a desktop monitor with a built-in gyroscope, Windows will automatically rotate the screen orientation between portrait and landscape mode whenever you physically tilt the device. This is intended to mimic the behavior of a smartphone or iPad.
However, the gyroscope sensors on Windows devices can often be overly sensitive. If you are reading on a tablet in bed, or simply adjusting the angle of your 2-in-1 laptop hinge, the screen might suddenly flip sideways, violently rearranging all your open windows and icons. If you prefer to manually control your display orientation, you can completely lock the screen rotation.
How to Lock the Screen Orientation in Windows 11
You can disable the automatic rotation feature directly from the Windows Display settings.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on System.
- Click on Display in the main window on the right.
- Scroll down to the “Scale & layout” section.
- Locate the toggle switch labelled Rotation lock. (Note: This option will only be visible and clickable if your device has a built-in gyroscope and is currently in tablet mode/detached from the keyboard).
- Click the toggle switch to turn it On (locking the rotation).
- Alternatively, you can click the battery/network icon cluster on the taskbar to open the Quick Settings panel, and click the Rotation lock button there.
