How to Safely Bypass Windows 11 ‘Memory Integrity’ Blocks (Install Legacy Drivers)

Windows 11 utilizes a suite of virtualization-based security features collectively known as “Core Isolation.” The most aggressive of these features is “Memory Integrity” (HVCI). This feature forces every single hardware driver on your computer to run in a secure, isolated container. Before a driver is allowed to load into the kernel, Memory Integrity checks its digital signature.

If you are trying to install software for an older piece of hardware—like a specialized MIDI audio interface from 2014, a legacy flatbed scanner, or an old steering wheel controller—the installation will instantly fail. Windows will block the driver because it lacks a modern security signature, completely breaking your expensive hardware. To make your device work, you must manually bypass and disable this specific virtualization block.

How to Safely Bypass Windows 11 Memory Integrity Blocks

You must turn off Core Isolation via the Windows Security dashboard to allow legacy drivers to load.

  1. Click the Start button, type Windows Security, and press Enter to launch the built-in antivirus dashboard.
  2. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Device security.
  3. At the top of the main window, you will see a section labeled Core isolation. Click the blue text link that says Core isolation details.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Memory integrity.
  5. Click the switch so it slides to the left and turns grey (Off).
  6. A User Account Control (UAC) prompt will appear, asking if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device. Click Yes.

Windows 11 will display a notification in the bottom-right corner of your screen stating that a restart is required. You must restart your computer immediately.

When your PC boots back up, the virtualization hypervisor that was actively blocking the legacy driver will be disabled. You can now run the installation CD or setup file for your old scanner or audio interface. The driver will load directly into the kernel without being challenged by the security system, and your hardware will function perfectly.
