Unlike Windows, which places the menu for every application (File, Edit, View, etc.) directly at the top of the individual application window, Apple’s macOS uses a single, universal Menu Bar permanently anchored to the very top edge of the monitor. This bar dynamically changes depending on which application you are currently clicking on.
For many users, this bar is an essential navigation tool. However, if you are using a MacBook with a smaller screen, you might have accidentally turned on a feature that automatically hides the Menu Bar to save vertical screen space. When hidden, the bar vanishes until you violently shove your mouse cursor to the absolute top edge of the screen. If you find this auto-hiding behaviour annoying, you can force the Menu Bar to remain visible at all times.
How to Keep the Menu Bar Visible
Apple moved this setting in recent versions of macOS, grouping it with the Control Centre preferences.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the screen. (If the bar is hidden, push your mouse all the way to the top of the screen to make the logo appear).
- Select System Settings from the drop-down list.
- Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Control Centre.
- Look at the main panel on the right. You will see a section labelled Menu Bar Only.
- Look for the setting labelled Automatically hide and show the menu bar.
You will see a drop-down menu next to this setting. By default, it might be set to “Always” or “In Full Screen Only.”
- Click the drop-down menu and select Never.
The change is instantaneous. The Menu Bar will drop down from the top of the screen and lock itself permanently into place, pushing all your desktop icons and open windows slightly downward to make room for it.
A Note on Full-Screen Apps
Even if you set the Menu Bar to “Never” hide, Apple makes one major exception. If you click the green maximize button on an application (like Safari or a video player) to enter true “Full Screen Mode,” macOS will completely take over the entire physical monitor, and the Menu Bar will still slide away to provide an immersive experience.
There is no way to prevent the Menu Bar from hiding in true Full Screen mode. If you absolutely need the Menu Bar visible while working, you must avoid clicking the green maximize button, and instead manually drag the corners of your application window to make it as large as possible without triggering the system’s Full Screen override.
