Starting with iOS 15, Apple introduced “Focus” modes, an evolution of Do Not Disturb. To enhance communication context, Apple also introduced “Focus Status.” When you have a Focus mode activated (like “Work” or “Sleep”), Focus Status automatically broadcasts a message to anyone who tries to text you via iMessage, informing them that your notifications are silenced. Disable Focus Status System-Wide
To prevent iOS from transmitting your notification state to Apple’s iMessage servers, we must toggle the global sharing setting off.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
- Scroll down and tap on Focus.
- At the bottom of the main Focus menu, locate and tap on Focus Status.
- You will see a global toggle at the top of the screen. Toggle the switch labeled Share Focus Status to the Off (grey) position.
- (Note: Toggling this global switch off automatically overrides the individual settings for every specific Focus mode listed below it, ensuring a complete, system-wide block).
Verify the Configuration Lockdown
By disabling this feature, iOS immediately sends a signal to Apple’s push notification servers, revoking permission for the system to append your notification state to incoming iMessage queries.
To verify the privacy lockdown is active, enable a strict Focus mode (such as Do Not Disturb) on your iPhone. Then, ask a friend or colleague to open their Messages app and navigate to their conversation thread with you.
