How to Completely Disable ‘Significant Locations’ (Tracking) System-Wide on an iPhone

Deep within the privacy settings of iOS lies a feature called “Significant Locations.” This system-level service constantly tracks and records the places you visit most often—your home, your workplace, your favourite coffee shop, and the routes you take between them. Apple states this data is end-to-end encrypted and used to provide personalized services like predictive traffic routing and improved Photos memories. However, many privacy-conscious users are deeply uncomfortable with their device maintaining a detailed, timestamped topographical map of their daily physical movements, regardless of encryption.

This guide explains how to completely disable the “Significant Locations” tracking system on an iPhone and clear the existing geographical database.

Disable and Clear Significant Locations

Because this is a highly sensitive system-level tracking feature, it is buried deep within the Location Services menu and requires biometric authentication to access.

  1. Unlock your iPhone and open the main Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Location Services at the very top of the screen.
  4. Scroll to the absolute bottom of the long list of apps and tap on System Services.
  5. Scroll down again and locate Significant Locations. Tap it.
  6. You will be immediately prompted to authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.
  7. First, let’s delete the existing data. Tap Clear History at the bottom of the screen and confirm the deletion.
  8. Finally, locate the master toggle switch named Significant Locations at the top of the screen.
  9. Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off (grey) position.

Verify the Privacy Lockdown

Once disabled, the iOS location daemon will immediately cease logging your prolonged stationary periods to the local database.

To verify the lockdown is successful, back out to the main “System Services” menu. The text next to “Significant Locations” will now explicitly say “Off”. You will notice that certain predictive features—like the Maps app automatically suggesting a route home when you get in your car at 5:00 PM—will no longer function. Your daily physical routine is now completely private and entirely unrecorded by the operating system.
