How to Completely Disable ‘Picture in Picture’ (PiP) in Microsoft Edge

Picture in Picture (PiP) is a browser feature that allows a video playing on a webpage to pop out into a small, floating window that remains on top of all other applications. While convenient for multitasking on a single monitor, PiP can be highly disruptive in professional environments. In corporate or educational settings, administrators often need to enforce focus on single web applications (like an online exam portal or a dedicated data entry screen) without the distraction of a floating media player hovering over the primary interface.

This guide explains how to completely disable the Picture in Picture (PiP) functionality system-wide in Microsoft Edge.

Disable Picture in Picture via Edge Settings

To prevent users from popping videos out of their native webpage containers, we must explicitly revoke the PiP permission within the browser’s global site settings.

1. Open Microsoft Edge.
2. Click the three horizontal dots (Settings and more) located in the top-right corner of the browser window.
3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Cookies and site permissions.
5. Scroll down the right-hand pane until you reach the “All permissions” section.
6. Find and click on Picture in picture control.
7. You will see a master toggle switch labelled Show Picture in picture control inside video frame.
8. Tap the switch to toggle it to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

Verify the Lockdown

The configuration change is applied instantly to all active tabs.

To verify the restriction is active, navigate to a video hosting website like YouTube or Vimeo and begin playing a video. Hover your mouse cursor over the video player; the small, square PiP icon that normally appears at the top center of the video frame will be completely missing. Furthermore, if you right-click twice on a YouTube video (the standard method to bypass custom context menus), the “Picture in picture” option will no longer be available in the native browser menu. The video is now permanently anchored to its parent webpage.
