Microsoft Edge includes a built-in digital wallet (“Edge Wallet”) that securely stores credit card information, billing addresses, and even passwords to expedite the checkout process on e-commerce websites. While highly convenient for personal shopping, it is a significant liability in an enterprise environment. Allowing users to store corporate credit cards within the browser profile can lead to unauthorized purchases if the workstation is left unlocked, and storing personal payment methods on a company-owned device violates strict data isolation policies.
This guide explains how to completely disable the Edge Wallet feature system-wide in Microsoft Edge using Group Policy, ensuring no payment methods can be saved or used.
Disable Edge Wallet via Group Policy
To enforce a strict block that prevents users from accessing the Wallet interface and stops the browser from prompting to save cards, we must deploy an administrative template. Note that this requires Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions.
- Log into Windows 11 with an Administrator account.
- Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialogue box.
- Type
gpedit.mscand press Enter to launch the Local Group Policy Editor. - In the left-hand navigation pane, strictly follow this exact path:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge - In the right-hand pane, scroll down to locate the policy named Enable Microsoft Edge Wallet.
- Double-click the policy to open its configuration window.
- Select the radio button next to Disabled.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
Verify the Financial Lockdown
Group Policy changes require the browser to read the registry upon its next launch. Close all active instances of Microsoft Edge.
To verify the restriction is active, reopen Microsoft Edge and navigate to the Wallet interface by typing edge://wallet in the address bar. Instead of seeing a dashboard for payment methods, you will be met with a page stating that the feature is disabled by your administrator. Furthermore, if you navigate to an e-commerce site and attempt to enter credit card details, the browser will no longer display the pop-up prompt asking if you want to save the card for future use. The browser is now strictly a web rendering engine, entirely stripped of its financial storage capabilities.
