How to Completely Disable ‘Smart Lock’ (Trusted Places & Devices) on Android

Android includes a convenience feature known as “Smart Lock” (sometimes rebranded as “Extend Unlock” on newer versions). When configured, this feature allows your phone to automatically bypass your PIN code or fingerprint requirement if certain environmental conditions are met. For example, you can instruct your phone to remain completely unlocked as long as it is connected to your car’s Bluetooth system, or as long as its GPS detects that it is inside your home.

While this saves you from constantly authenticating throughout the day, it is a massive security loophole. GPS spoofing is trivial, and Bluetooth connections have significant range. If you are at a coffee shop below your apartment and someone steals your phone from your table, the phone will realize it is physically near your “Trusted Place” (your apartment directly above) and instantly unlock itself for the thief, granting them full access to your banking apps and emails. To guarantee that your cryptographic screen lock is absolute and cannot be bypassed by environmental proximity sensors, you must completely disable Smart Lock.

Disabling Smart Lock via Security Settings

You can turn off all trusted agents and force the operating system to demand a PIN code or biometric authentication every single time the screen turns on.

  1. Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Security & privacy (or just “Security”).
  3. Tap on More security settings (or scroll down to the “Advanced” section).
  4. Tap on Trust agents.
  5. You will see a master toggle switch labelled Smart Lock (Google).
  6. Tap the toggle switch to turn it Off.

Verifying the Lockdown

Once the Trust Agent is disabled, you must verify that the system has successfully purged the environmental bypass rules.

  1. Navigate back to the main Security & privacy menu.
  2. Tap on Device unlock (or “Screen lock”).
  3. Look for the entry labelled Smart Lock or Extend Unlock. This menu option should now be completely missing from the list, or greyed out and inaccessible.

The change takes effect instantly. Your Android smartphone is now a hardened cryptographic fortress. It will completely ignore your GPS location, your connected Bluetooth headphones, and your smartwatch. Every single time the screen turns off, the phone will instantly lock, and it will demand explicit biometric or PIN authentication to grant access, ensuring absolute physical security.
