Modern smartphones have almost entirely replaced traditional, battery-powered flashlights for everyday tasks like finding lost keys in the dark or navigating a dark hallway at night. The iPhone uses the LED flash located next to its rear camera lens to act as a powerful, continuous light source.
Because you often need a flashlight in sudden, unexpected situations (like a power outage), Apple designed the feature to be accessible in less than two seconds, without ever needing to unlock the phone.
Method 1: From the Lock Screen (The Fastest Way)
If you have an iPhone with Face ID (an iPhone X or newer, which lacks a physical Home button), you can turn the flashlight on immediately from the lock screen.
- Tap the screen once to wake the phone up, or simply lift it towards your face.
- Look at the very bottom left corner of the screen. You will see a small, circular Flashlight icon.
- Firmly press and hold the icon for about one second. You will feel a slight vibration (haptic feedback) in your fingers.
- Let go of the screen.
The flashlight will instantly turn on. To turn it off, simply press and hold the same icon again until you feel the vibration.
(Note: You cannot simply tap the icon lightly. Apple requires a firm “long press” to prevent the flashlight from accidentally turning on while the phone is bouncing around inside your pocket).
Method 2: Using the Control Center (For Older iPhones)
If you have an older iPhone with a physical Home button (like an iPhone 8 or an iPhone SE), you will not have the flashlight icon on your lock screen. You must use the Control Center.
- Wake the phone up.
- Swipe up from the very bottom edge of the screen. (If you have a newer Face ID phone, you must swipe down from the top right corner instead).
- The Control Center will appear. Look for the small, square button featuring a Flashlight icon.
- Tap the button once to turn the light on. Tap it again to turn it off.
How to Change the Flashlight Brightness
If you are reading a book in bed while your partner is sleeping, the default brightness of the iPhone flashlight is blindingly intense. Fortunately, you can actually dim the LED.
You cannot change the brightness from the lock screen icon; you must use the Control Center method.
- Open the Control Center (swipe down from the top right, or swipe up from the bottom, depending on your model).
- Locate the Flashlight icon.
- Instead of tapping it quickly, press and hold your finger firmly on the Flashlight icon.
- The icon will expand into a large, vertical slider filling the screen.
- Drag your finger up or down on the slider to adjust the intensity. There are four distinct levels of brightness.
- Tap anywhere outside the slider to return to the Control Center.
Your iPhone will remember this specific brightness level. The next time you turn the flashlight on (even if you use the fast lock screen button), it will automatically activate at the brightness level you just selected.
How to Turn Off the Flashlight Quickly (The Camera Trick)
If you accidentally turn your flashlight on in a crowded movie theater and need to turn it off instantly without fumbling through menus, there is a secret shortcut.
While on your lock screen, simply swipe your finger slightly to the left (as if you were trying to open the Camera). The moment the iPhone realizes the Camera is opening, it will instantly kill the flashlight to prepare the lens for a photo. You don’t even have to open the camera fully; a half-swipe is enough to force the light to turn off.
