Microsoft is highly aggressive when it comes to promoting its Edge web browser within Windows 11. Even if you have successfully navigated the complicated process of setting Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox as your default browser, Windows will periodically display a large, intrusive pop-up notification urging you to switch back to Edge. This prompt often appears after major Windows Updates or when you use the Windows search bar to look for a web query.
If you are firmly committed to your third-party browser and want to stop Microsoft from constantly asking you to switch, you need to disable a specific background tracking setting that monitors your app usage.
How to Disable “Tips and Suggestions” in Windows 11
The popup asking you to switch to Edge is classified internally by Windows as a “suggestion.” You can turn off these suggestions in the System Settings.
- Open the Settings app (press the Win + I keys simultaneously).
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
- On the right side, scroll down and click on Notifications.
- Scroll to the very bottom of the Notifications page.
- Click on the Additional settings dropdown menu to expand it.
- Uncheck the box labeled Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device.
- Uncheck the box labeled Get tips and suggestions when I use Windows.
How to Stop Edge Prompts in the Start Menu
Even after disabling global suggestions, Microsoft may still inject Edge promotions directly into your Start Menu or the Search interface.
- Go back to the main Settings menu.
- Click on Privacy & security in the left sidebar.
- Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on General.
- Find the toggle switch labeled Show me suggested content in the Settings app and turn it Off.
By disabling these suggestion engines, Windows 11 will stop analyzing your default apps and will leave you in peace to use the browser of your choice without recurring pop-ups.
