Since the dawn of graphical user interfaces, the default mouse cursor has almost always been a stark white arrow with a thin black outline. While this classic design is familiar, it is not always the best choice for visibility. If you have a visual impairment, use multiple high-resolution monitors, or simply want to personalize your desktop aesthetic, Windows 11 allows you to easily change the color and size of your mouse cursor without downloading sketchy third-party theming software.
Why Custom Cursors Matter
Windows 11 includes excellent accessibility tools built directly into the operating system. Changing the cursor from white to a bright neon color (like magenta or lime green) makes it significantly easier to track as it moves rapidly across complex spreadsheets, busy websites, or dark-mode applications. You no longer have to frantically wiggle your mouse to figure out which screen your cursor is hiding on.
How to Change the Cursor Color in Settings
The customization options are located within the Accessibility menu, rather than the standard Personalization menu.
- Click the Start button and open the Settings app (the gear icon), or press Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Accessibility.
- Under the “Vision” section, click on Mouse pointer and touch.
Selecting Your Custom Style
Once inside the menu, you will see a section labelled Mouse pointer style with four distinct options:
- White: The default Windows cursor.
- Black: A solid black cursor with a white outline.
- Inverted: A dynamic cursor that automatically changes color depending on what it is hovering over (turning white on black backgrounds, and black on white backgrounds) to ensure it is always visible.
- Custom: A colorful cursor icon (usually depicting a green arrow).
To choose a specific color, click the Custom option.
- A palette of “Recommended colors” will appear immediately below the selection boxes. You can click on any of these default neon colors to apply it instantly.
- If you want a specific shade, click the Choose another color button (the plus icon).
- A color picker window will pop up, allowing you to drag the selector to any hue on the spectrum. Click Done to apply your custom creation.
Adjusting the Cursor Size
To maximize visibility, you can pair your new custom color with a larger arrow.
Directly beneath the color options, you will find a Size slider. Drag the slider to the right to increase the scale of the cursor. The changes happen in real-time, allowing you to easily find the perfect balance between visibility and precision.
