The Distracting Dynamic Desktop
Apple includes several stunning “Dynamic Desktops” with macOS—beautiful landscapes that automatically shift from dawn to dusk to night based on your local time of day. While visually impressive, having your desktop background suddenly transition from a bright, sunny desert to a dark, starry night can be distracting. Additionally, if you work in an office environment, you may prefer a static, professional wallpaper that does not draw attention to itself or consume unnecessary background system resources.
How to Disable Dynamic Shifting
You can easily instruct macOS to freeze a dynamic wallpaper on a specific time of day, ensuring it remains perfectly static forever.
1. Click the Apple logo () in the top-left corner of the menu bar.
2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older versions).
3. In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Wallpaper.
4. Look at the top of the window, where your currently active wallpaper is displayed.
5. You will see a dropdown menu that is likely set to Dynamic.
6. Click this dropdown menu and change it to either Light (Static) or Dark (Static).
Stopping Folder Slideshows
If your wallpaper is changing completely—jumping between entirely different photos every few minutes—you have accidentally enabled a slideshow. In the same Wallpaper settings menu, scroll down to the “Add Photo or Folder” section. If you see a grid of your personal photos actively cycling, look for the dropdown menu at the top of that specific photo grid (it will usually say “Change picture: Every 5 minutes” or something similar). Click that dropdown and change it to Never. Your Mac will now permanently lock onto the single image you have selected.
